What Ever Happened to Cain?

NOTE: Except for the Biblical passage, everything written here is a work of fiction, a product of my imagination.

And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”

And Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear! Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face. I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”

And the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him seven-fold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.

Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwell in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. — Genesis 4:10-16 (NKJV)

You might not have seen this coming, have you, Cain? You dwelt in Nod on the east of Eden, settled down and married your sister. Bore your first son and established a city and named it after him. But after that, where did you go? No one knows.

How was it like to wander throughout the face of the Earth? How was it like to pay the price of treacherously killing your own brother and had mockingly lied to the Lord about it? How was it like to be cursed and marked forever?

What does your mark looks like? Who among humans have seen the mark of Cain? Is it on your forehead? Or on one of your cheeks? Does it look like a scar? Was it really a divine protection from Death?

So you came to be a legend, Cain the fugitive, a cursed vagabond. You wandered throughout the face of the Earth but you couldn’t till the soil you have loved so much. What did you do? Did you change job? What were your jobs during the past thousands of years?

I imagine you being a soldier in one of the battles but no one dared to struck you with their sword, arrow, or spear. Or if ever you’ve been hurt in a battle, you might have been resurrected somewhere. A doctor perhaps? A lawyer? How about a teacher?

How is it like to become the first and only immortal on Earth? How old could you have been today? Aside from siring humans, you may have sired some creatures from the descendants of the Light and some from the descendants of the Dark perhaps. It doesn’t matter to you anyhow. You just need someone to share your life with. These children might have gotten a drop of immortality from your blood, thus came out creatures from the Light and from the Dark living among us humans. You are the only fully immortal creature, wandering the Earth until this day. Yet, your children can’t take the curse away from you. Your mark prevents them to.

You might have been tired now, yet Death eludes you, even though how earnestly you sought for him. Maybe, just maybe, you have met Azrael along the way. But Azrael, the Angel of Death, avoided you. He, too, knows the mark too well. Thus, you continue to wander, begging people to kill you and take your curse upon themselves. But no one dares to hurt you for the fear of the seven-fold curse. No, Azrael is not afraid of your curse. He was just following orders from the God of the Universe.

I pity you now, Cain. You’ve been carrying that burden of a curse for too long. Come and present yourself to me. Let me try to nullify your curse and let us see what will happen to the seven-fold curse on me. Let us meet at the Edge of the Universe, where Chaos and Creation sit side by side, where powers from the Light and from the Dark may have originated. I’ll nullify your curse there, for I am the Nullifier of the Powers that are and that be, be it from the Light or from the Dark.
