If You Want To Write

If You Want To Write

IF YOU WANT TO WRITE (A Book About Art, Independence and Spirit) by Brenda Ueland (1987, Graywolf Press)

One of the rare finds I found in Booksale years ago, this copy is the 1987 version from Graywolf Press, printed four years after Brenda Ueland’s death. Most writers say that this is “the best book ever written on how to write.” I agree. This should be in every writer’s bookshelf. Let Brenda Ueland’s words seep into the consciousness and believe:

Everybody is talented because everybody who is human has something to express… Everybody is original, if he tells the truth, if he speaks from himself. But it must be from his true self and not from the self he thinks he should be… So remember these two things: you are talented and you are original. Be sure of that… Because the best way to know the Truth or Beauty is to try to express it.”

And while sitting in front of my computer, this song came into my mind:

“Everything has its season, everything has its time

show me a reason and I’ll soon show you a rhyme

Rivers belong where they can ramble

eagles belong where they can fly

I’ve got to be where my feelings can run free

got to find my corner of the sky.”

— “Corner of the Sky” from the Broadway play “Pippin
